The German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, DKFZ) is a member of the Helmholtz Association and with its more than 3,000 employees the largest biomedical research institute in Germany and one of Europe’s leading cancer research centers. Our mission is to unravel the causes and mechanisms underlying cancer development and progression and, based on innovative research, develop novel strategies for the diagnosis, early detection, prevention and treatment of cancer. To efficiently translate novel findings from basic science into the clinic, the DKFZ, in partnership with leading University Medical Centers, established the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) in Heidelberg and Dresden as well as the German Cancer Consortium (DKTK) at eight sites in Germany. The DKFZ offers a highly attractive scientific setting with a unique broad spectrum of opportunities for collaboration. Moreover, we provide excellent research conditions, an international and collegial research environment and access to state-of-the-art core facilities.
The purpose of the “DKFZ Leadership Program in Cancer Research” is to increase the number of highly qualified scientists in high-level positions. This especially applies to female scientists, who are currently underrepresented at DKFZ, although the program is open to all qualified applicants. The successful candidate will be offered a research division at DKFZ. This includes a permanent position as division head (salary level equivalent to W3 full professorship), the consideration for a W3 full professorship with one of the cooperating universities of DKFZ and funding at an internationally competitive level. Furthermore, the successful candidate will have the option to participate in mentoring and leadership programs. Among candidates of equal aptitude and qualifications, a person with disabilities will be given preference.
The successful candidate is expected to contribute, strengthen and expand research on cancer prevention at the DKFZ. We are looking for an internationally recognized scientist with an outstanding track record with respect to publications and third-party funding, including consortium projects. The candidate will have previously demonstrated the ability to direct a program of highly innovative and original research, which addresses fundamental questions related to cancer prevention. These may be related to primary or secondary prevention and may include methodological research as well as population-based and patient-based studies with high translational potential. The highly innovative research portfolio should include state-of-the-art study designs and technologies. In addition, it is expected that the post holder will actively participate in the existing research networks of the DKFZ, such as the German Cancer Consortium (DKTK) and the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT), and will contribute to the creation of new research Networks.
